KNEE REPLACEMENT

A total or partial knee replacement replaces the worn surfaces of the knee with metal and plastic parts, most often because of osteoarthritis. Your surgeon decides which suits you after examining you and your scans.

HIP REPLACEMENT

Replaces the worn ball and socket of the hip with metal, plastic or ceramic parts, to ease pain and help you move more easily. Most people go home 1 to 3 days after surgery.

ROBOTIC-ASSISTED JOINT REPLACEMENT

Several partner hospitals offer cutting-edge robotic-assisted knee and hip replacement, where the surgeon uses a robotic system to help plan and place the new joint.

SLIPPED DISC SURGERY

A discectomy removes the part of a slipped disc that is pressing on a nerve. A decompression (laminectomy) removes a small piece of bone to free trapped nerves. A specialist who has seen you and your scans decides whether an operation is likely to help.

Know moreShow less

For a lower-back decompression, NHS information gives a hospital stay of around 2 to 5 days, and many people return to work in around 4 to 6 weeks.

Back pain with numbness around your bottom or genitals, loss of bladder or bowel control, or leg weakness that is getting worse needs emergency care where you are, not a planned trip abroad.

SPINAL FUSION AND SCOLIOSIS SURGERY

Spinal fusion joins two or more spine bones with screws, rods and a bone graft, usually when simpler treatment has not worked. Scoliosis surgery corrects part of a sideways curve and fuses the spine so the curve cannot get worse.

Know moreShow less

Most people with scoliosis never need an operation, and adults have it only occasionally. After scoliosis surgery, an NHS specialist hospital gives a hospital stay of about a week. Spinal fusion has a longer recovery than other spine operations.

PHYSIOTHERAPY AND REHABILITATION

A physiotherapist starts you moving soon after a joint replacement or spine operation, and shows you exercises before you leave hospital. You keep up the exercises at home, as full recovery can take several months.

Many people walk without aids about 6 weeks after a knee replacement, and return to work about 6 to 12 weeks after it, depending on the job.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does orthopaedic surgery cost in India?

As indicative prices in October 2026: a knee or hip replacement from about £5,000 (US$6,650), surgery to remove a slipped disc (discectomy) from about £3,400 (US$4,520) and spinal fusion from about £5,400 (US$7,180). The hospital confirms the final price after reviewing your medical records.

Is it safe to have orthopaedic surgery abroad?

Every operation has risks wherever it happens, including infection and blood clots, and no hospital can guarantee an outcome. Before you go, check the surgeon's experience, the possible complications and how your aftercare will work at home. Talk to your own doctor too.

Does a slipped disc always need surgery?

No. Most slipped discs get better slowly with rest, gentle exercise and painkillers, and surgery is not usually needed. A specialist may discuss surgery if symptoms have not improved, or if weakness or numbness is getting worse.

When can I fly home after surgery?

UK Government advice is to stay at least 10 days after an operation under general anaesthetic before flying home. Your surgeon checks you and tells you when you are fit to fly. Surgery and long journeys both raise the chance of a blood clot, so ask how to lower your risk on the flight. After spine surgery, anyone with a leak of spinal fluid should not fly, so keep your return date flexible.

Can patients from Nigeria travel to India for joint or spine surgery?

Yes. Nigerian passport holders cannot use India's e-Visa, so you apply for a regular Medical visa at the High Commission of India in Abuja or the Consulate General of India in Lagos. You also need an original yellow fever certificate. Our Indian medical visa guide explains each step.

I am on an NHS waiting list. What are my options?

In England, if you have waited more than 18 weeks, you can ask to be treated at another NHS hospital that could see you sooner. You can also pay privately in the UK, or plan surgery in India. Read more in our guide to NHS knee and hip replacement waiting times.
