Questions

Frequently asked questions

From about £5,000 (US$6,650) for one knee, as an indicative price in October 2026. A hip replacement also starts from about £5,000. The hospital confirms the final price after reviewing your medical records. Flights, your stay and insurance are extra.

How much does a private knee replacement cost in the UK?

How much does a private hip replacement cost in the UK?

Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital listed a guide price of £16,135 for a hip replacement in October 2026. Prices vary between hospitals and areas.

Is knee replacement abroad safe?

Every operation has risks wherever it happens, including infection and blood clots, and no hospital can guarantee an outcome. Before you go, check the medical team's experience, the possible complications and how your aftercare will work at home. Talk to your own doctor too.

Which is the best country for hip replacement surgery?

There is no single best country for everyone. Compare the surgeon's experience, the hospital's standards, what the price includes, how long you must stay before flying and how aftercare works at home. Be wary of anyone who pressures you to decide quickly.

How long do I need to stay in India after a knee or hip replacement?

UK Government advice is to stay at least 10 days after surgery under general anaesthetic before flying home. After you leave hospital, you recover nearby until the surgeon checks you and says you are fit to fly. Surgery and long journeys both raise the chance of a blood clot, so ask your surgeon how to lower your risk on the flight. You take home a full medical report and your implant details for your GP or doctor.

How long does a knee or hip replacement last?

Most knee replacements last about 25 years, and a hip replacement should last at least 15 years. Your surgeon can tell you what to expect in your case.

Can a family member travel with me?

Yes. UK passport holders can apply online for an e-Medical visa, and a family member can travel with you on an e-Medical Attendant visa. Nigerian passport holders apply for a regular Medical visa in Abuja or Lagos. We help with each step.

I am on an NHS waiting list. What are my options?

In England, if you have waited more than 18 weeks, you can ask to be treated at another NHS hospital that could see you sooner. You can also pay privately in the UK, or plan surgery in India. Read more in our guide to NHS knee and hip replacement waiting times.
