IVF (IN VITRO FERTILISATION)
Eggs are collected from the ovaries and mixed with sperm in a laboratory. If an embryo develops, it is placed in the womb a few days later. A full IVF cycle usually takes 3 to 6 weeks.
Know moreShow less
Before egg collection you have daily hormone injections for about 2 weeks, with scans and blood tests. Egg collection takes about 20 minutes, usually with sedation. You can do a pregnancy test about 16 days after the embryo transfer.
ICSI AND MALE INFERTILITY
With ICSI, a single sperm is injected into an egg as part of IVF, mainly for sperm problems such as a very low sperm count. Poor quality semen is a common cause of fertility problems, so both partners should expect tests.

Depending on the cause, other options for male infertility include medicines or surgery. A specialist decides what is suitable after testing.
IUI (INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION)
Sperm is placed directly in the womb. It is one of the options besides IVF that a fertility specialist may discuss with you.
Know moreMEDICINES TO HELP OVULATION
Medicines can help ovulation for some women. Whether they, IVF or another treatment suits you depends on your age, your health and the cause, and only a fertility specialist can decide.
Know moreEGG, SPERM AND EMBRYO FREEZING
Eggs, sperm and embryos can be frozen and stored. Under Indian law they can be stored for up to 10 years.

If embryos are frozen, they may be transferred on a later trip.

*The figures above are intended to give a general idea of the potential cost savings when choosing IVF in India. UK: average private cycle price given by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), viewed October 2026; it varies a lot between clinics and may not include consultations, medicines or embryo storage. India: indicative starting price from publicly available price guides, October 2026. The hospital sets your final price after reviewing your test results. IVF prices in Nigeria and Ghana vary widely between clinics, so we do not show a saving against them. Flights, visas and a stay of about 3 weeks are extra.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
How much does IVF cost in Nigeria?
Prices vary between clinics and depend on the medicines and tests you need. Ask each clinic for a full written quote, then add flights and your stay when you compare it with IVF in India, which starts from about US$2,660 per cycle (October 2026).
What is the IVF cost in Ghana?
Prices in Ghana also vary between clinics. Ask for a written quote listing everything included, such as medicines, scans and embryo freezing, so you can compare like with like.
How long do I need to stay in India for IVF?
Plan to stay around 3 weeks for one IVF cycle, or longer if your treatment starts in India. Some early steps may be possible at home, so ask the clinic before you book. You will usually do your pregnancy test at home.
What does Indian law say about IVF for foreign patients?
Under the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act 2021, every IVF clinic and sperm or egg bank must be registered, so ask to see the registration. Treatment is for women aged over 21 and under 50, and men aged over 21 and under 55. Clinics may not offer a baby of a chosen sex.
Can I have surrogacy in India?
India allows only unpaid surrogacy, and the law limits it to married Indian couples and some Indian women. So surrogacy in India is generally not open to patients from Nigeria, Ghana or the UK. If you are from the UK, the HFEA advises getting legal advice before using donors or a surrogate overseas.
What are the risks of IVF, and how often does it work?
Most people have no serious problems, but IVF carries some risks, including ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, multiple pregnancy and ectopic pregnancy. Get medical help straight away for severe tummy pain, trouble breathing or chest pain after treatment. In the UK in 2024, the average birth rate per embryo transferred using a patient's own eggs was 30%: 38% for people aged 18 to 34 and 8% for those aged 43 to 44 (HFEA). Results vary with age and cause, so they are not a prediction for you.
Is fertility treatment abroad safe?
Rules differ between countries. The HFEA advises checking how the clinic is regulated, how it reports success rates and what happens if something goes wrong.
Do I need a visa for IVF in India from Nigeria or Ghana?
Yes. Nigerian passport holders apply for a regular Medical visa at the High Commission of India in Abuja or the Consulate General of India in Lagos, and India also asks them for proof of a recent polio vaccine. Ghanaian, Kenyan and UK passport holders can apply online for an e-Medical visa. Travellers from Nigeria and Ghana need an original yellow fever certificate. See our Indian medical visa guide.
