ANGIOPLASTY AND STENTS (PCI)
A thin tube is passed through an artery in your wrist or groin up to your heart. A small balloon widens the narrowed artery, and a small mesh tube called a stent is usually left in to hold it open. You stay awake, with a local anaesthetic.

It usually takes 30 minutes to 2 hours. After a planned procedure, most people leave hospital the same day or the next day.
Afterwards most people take aspirin plus a second blood-thinning medicine, usually for up to a year. Never stop these medicines unless your cardiologist tells you to, as stopping early greatly raises the chance of a heart attack.
CORONARY BYPASS SURGERY (CABG)
A healthy blood vessel, usually from your leg or chest, is used to carry blood around the blocked part of a heart artery. It is done under general anaesthetic and takes about 3 to 6 hours.
Know moreShow less
Most bypass operations are open heart surgery, with a heart-lung machine keeping your blood moving. Most people spend about a week in hospital, starting in intensive care, and full recovery takes about 2 to 3 months.
HEART VALVE REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT
A heart valve that has become too narrow, or leaks, can be repaired, or replaced if repair is not possible. Most valve replacements are open heart surgery.

Mechanical valves last a long time, but you need blood-thinning medicine for the rest of your life. Tissue valves usually last 15 to 20 years.
If you have a new valve, tell any dentist about it and keep your teeth and gums healthy, as dental infections can lead to a serious heart infection.
TAVI VALVE REPLACEMENT
Some people with a narrowed aortic valve who cannot have open surgery may have TAVI instead. A new valve is passed up through a blood vessel on a thin tube, while you are awake with sedation. It takes 1 to 2 hours.

CORONARY ANGIOGRAM
An angiogram is an X-ray test of the heart arteries. It usually comes before angioplasty or bypass surgery, and sometimes the angioplasty is done in the same procedure.

Cardiac rehabilitation gives you support with exercise, medicines and lifestyle after treatment. After angioplasty it usually starts in hospital, with a follow-up within 4 to 8 weeks. Ask the hospital for a written plan to take home.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How much does heart surgery cost in India?
As indicative prices in October 2026: angioplasty with one stent from about £3,400 (US$4,500), coronary bypass surgery from about £4,400 (US$5,800) and an aortic valve replacement from about £6,000 (US$8,000). The final price depends on your tests and, for angioplasty, how many stents you need. The hospital confirms it after reviewing your records.
What is a stent?
A stent is a small mesh tube placed in a narrowed heart artery during angioplasty to hold it open. It stays there. Afterwards you take blood-thinning medicines, which you must not stop without your cardiologist's advice.
Which is better, bypass surgery or angioplasty?
Neither is better for everyone. Angioplasty has a quicker recovery and a lower chance of complications, while bypass surgery can work better long term for some people, such as people with diabetes or several blocked arteries. Often only one option is suitable. MedPanda does not recommend treatment: the hospital's heart team does, after reviewing your tests.
Is open heart surgery safe?
It is a major operation with real risks, such as infection, bleeding, an irregular heartbeat and stroke. It is only offered when the benefits outweigh the risks for you, and your heart team will explain your own risks.
When can I fly home after heart treatment?
Only when your heart team says you are fit to fly. UK aviation guidance says some people may be fit to fly about 3 days after an uncomplicated angioplasty, and about 10 to 14 days after bypass or valve surgery, once recovered without complications. Most people need one trip. You cannot lift anything heavy for 3 months after chest surgery, so plan for help with luggage.
Can patients from Nigeria travel to India for heart treatment?
Yes. Nigerian passport holders cannot use India's e-Visa, so you apply for a regular Medical visa at the High Commission of India in Abuja or the Consulate General of India in Lagos. Patients from Ghana and the UK can apply online for an e-Medical visa. Travellers from Nigeria and Ghana need an original yellow fever certificate. Our Indian medical visa guide explains each step.
