Have gallbladder or hernia surgery in India and save up to 74%* on treatment cost

Some symptoms need urgent care where you are. Yellow skin or eyes, a high temperature with chills, or sudden severe tummy pain can mean a gallstone problem. Sudden severe pain at a hernia, being sick, or not being able to pass stools or wind can mean the hernia is stuck. Get urgent medical help locally, and do not wait to travel.

KEYHOLE GALLBLADDER REMOVAL

Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) is the usual treatment when gallstones cause pain or other problems. Most are done by keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery under general anaesthetic, through a few small cuts, and take about 1 hour.

Most people go home the same day, though some stay one night, and many return to work in 1 to 2 weeks. You can live without a gallbladder and keep eating a normal, healthy diet.

Sometimes open surgery, with one larger cut, is needed, for example if the gallbladder is badly inflamed, and recovery then takes longer. A stone blocking the bile duct may first be removed with an endoscope (ERCP).

Gallstones that cause no symptoms usually need no treatment. Your treating specialist decides whether surgery is right for you.

GROIN (INGUINAL) HERNIA REPAIR

The most common type of hernia, in the groin. It is repaired with open surgery through one larger cut, or keyhole surgery through a few small cuts, and the surgeon usually places a mesh to strengthen the weak area.

You can usually go home the same day. Recovery usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, with no heavy lifting during that time, and many people return to light work in 1 to 2 weeks.

A groin hernia that causes no symptoms may not need treatment. The surgeon who examines you decides.

UMBILICAL AND INCISIONAL HERNIA REPAIR

An umbilical hernia is near the belly button, and in adults it rarely goes away on its own. An incisional hernia pushes through the scar of an earlier operation. The repair method depends on the hernia and your health.

HIATUS HERNIA TREATMENT

In a hiatus hernia, part of the stomach moves up into the chest. It is usually managed with lifestyle changes and medicines, with surgery only if these do not help.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What are gallstones, and are they dangerous?

Gallstones are small, hard stones that form in the gallbladder. Most people who have them never get symptoms and need no treatment. If they cause pain or complications, such as an inflamed gallbladder or a blocked bile duct, surgery is usually offered.

How much does private gallbladder removal cost in the UK?

Prices vary by hospital. In October 2026, Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital listed a guide price of £8,590 for keyhole gallbladder removal. At partner hospitals in India it starts from about £2,250 (US$3,000), and the hospital confirms the final price after reviewing your records.

What is the treatment for a hernia?

A hernia that causes symptoms is usually repaired with open or keyhole surgery, often using a mesh. A groin hernia with no symptoms may not need treatment. A hiatus hernia is usually treated with lifestyle changes and medicines first.

What are the risks of gallbladder and hernia surgery?

Every operation has risks. After gallbladder removal they include a wound infection, a blood clot in a vein and, rarely, a bile leak or injury to a bile duct. After hernia repair they include infection, bleeding, the hernia coming back and groin pain lasting more than 3 months. Your surgeon will explain your own risk, which depends on your age and health.

When can I fly home after surgery?

Your surgeon decides when you are fit to fly. UK aviation guidance for doctors suggests avoiding flights for about 24 hours after keyhole surgery and for 10 days after open abdominal surgery. Recent surgery and journeys over 4 hours both raise the risk of blood clots, so your surgeon may advise staying longer. Most people need one trip.

Can I have an endoscopy or colonoscopy in India?

These tests are usually done near home, where results are easy to follow up, and we don't suggest travelling to India just for a routine test. If you are already having surgery in India, the hospital may arrange any extra tests it needs.

Can patients from Nigeria travel to India for surgery?

Yes. Nigerian passport holders cannot use India's e-Visa, so you apply for a regular Medical visa at the High Commission of India in Abuja or the Consulate General of India in Lagos. Patients from Ghana and the UK can apply online for an e-Medical visa. Travellers from Nigeria and Ghana need an original yellow fever certificate. Our Indian medical visa guide explains each step.
