BRAIN TUMOUR SURGERY (CRANIOTOMY)

Surgery is often used to remove a brain tumour, taking out as much of the abnormal tissue as is safely possible. In a craniotomy, the most common operation, the surgeon opens a section of skull bone to reach the tumour and then fixes it back in place.

AWAKE CRANIOTOMY

An awake craniotomy may be used when a tumour is near areas of the brain that control speech or movement. Local anaesthetic means you should not feel pain.

KEYHOLE BRAIN SURGERY (NEUROENDOSCOPY)

A thin tube with a camera is passed through a small hole in the skull, so the surgeon can reach some tumours without a larger opening.

PITUITARY TUMOUR SURGERY

Pituitary tumours are often removed through the nose, in an operation called transsphenoidal surgery.

SPINE SURGERY

Neurosurgeons also operate on the spine, for example to free a nerve trapped by a slipped disc. Spine operations, their costs and recovery are covered on our orthopaedics page.

REHABILITATION THERAPY

After brain surgery, some people need physiotherapy, speech therapy or occupational therapy to help with weakness, tiredness or speech difficulties.

Early on you may feel weak or dizzy. Keep taking steroids or anti-seizure medicines exactly as prescribed, and plan who will do your check-ups and scans at home, as they are needed for at least a few years.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does brain tumour surgery cost in India?

Hospital treatment starts from about US$7,450 (£5,600), as an indicative price in October 2026. The hospital confirms the final price after reviewing your scans and reports.

How long is the hospital stay after brain tumour surgery?

It depends on the operation and your recovery. One NHS trust gives about 2 to 5 days after a craniotomy, sometimes longer. You then need time to recover before you can fly.

Will I need more treatment after surgery?

Sometimes. Surgery may be only one part of the plan. Steroids may be given to reduce swelling, and radiotherapy or chemotherapy may follow to treat any abnormal cells left behind. Ask early where any follow-on treatment would happen, in India or at home, so it can be planned before you travel.

When can I fly home after brain surgery?

Only when your surgeon says you are fit to fly, because air can be left inside the skull and may expand at altitude. UK Civil Aviation Authority advice, reported by The Brain Tumour Charity, is to avoid flying for about 7 days after neurosurgery, and one NHS trust advises at least 3 months after a craniotomy. Airlines may have their own rules, so keep your return date flexible.

Can patients from Nigeria get an e-Visa for treatment in India?

No. Nigerians apply for a regular Medical visa at the High Commission of India in Abuja, or at the Consulate General of India in Lagos for the 16 southern states it covers. Patients from Ghana and Kenya can apply online for an e-Medical visa. Everyone travelling from Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya needs an original yellow fever certificate. See our Indian medical visa guide.

Which hospital in India is best for brain surgery?

There is no single answer for everyone. Compare the neurosurgery team's experience with your condition, what the price includes, how any follow-on treatment will be arranged and how your care continues at home. Be wary of anyone who pressures you to decide quickly.
